Today I was out with Daniel and Natasha on their first day in winter to look at the basic skills. And what an introduction, with snow to low levels and blizzards higher up with some very strong gusts, they got a very realistic view of Scottish winter.
Just below the lochans of Stob corie nan Lochan we made our way around the corrie looking at the vital element of good footwork over all terrain before moving onto the basics of ice axe arrests. Along the way we also discussed the importance of good route choice and referring to the avalanche forecast to aid this decision making process.
There was a lot going on with the snow today. With a lot of fresh snow that fell last night on top of a wet base with also a lot of graupel around. This coupled with the freezing level rising there was a lot of signs of fresh snow slipping off buttress and crags.
