Yesterday I finished with 3 people, at 6.30am this morning I had Ross and Andy for the Ben Nevis attempt. About 3o minutes into the walk Ross wasn’t feeling very well, so he took the sensible decision to turn round. So it was just myself and Andy for the rest of the way.
We made swift time up to the Red Burn, which has now almost melted but looks very unstable. Once on the zig zags, we almost walked to the top of bend 4 on the path and then up onto the plateaux where there are a few cairns just about showing now with the recent thaw. After 3 hours we were at the summit, in drizzle and low cloud and warm temperatures. After a few photos we started to make our way down past the Gardaloo gully cairns which are now just showing and made a quick decent back down in to ‘summer’ conditions.
There were quite a few people lower down in summer kit making their way up, and it might be the start of the season where people get caught out with the contrast of conditions on the lower half of the mountain and the very wintry upper half.
