Lake District – SPA days

On Tuesday and Wednesday I met up with Wolfy and Garry who were keen to cover some of the SPA syllabus.  We headed up to Scout Crag in Langdale and spent the morning talking through set-ups, gear, safety and all the questions that those topics bring up.  We then used one of the climbs that Wolfy set up to get the guys on a bottom rope climbing but placing gear as they went up, to look at good gear placements, tactics of placing gear and when to do it through the climb, as I went up alongside them.  After some lunch we then headed up to Upper Scout crag and I led them up Route 2, a 3 pitch VDiff looking at belays and rope management.

A good day out, and a good base for their knowledge of their future climbing.

On Wednesday I was with Garry again and we headed into Borrowdale and up to Dove Nest crag.  On the way in we picked a small buttress and talked through setting up a group abseil and ran through a basic rescue scenario where I got stuck half way down.  We then moved onto the crag and climbed Outside route, a Diff but a very unique route.  Weaving its way up and into the crag, ending up in a cave with a sporting move out the side and then up the slabs to the top.  Garry enjoyed this route and got to see and ask about all the belays, most of them in awkward positions.

After, we still had a little time so we headed up Adams Rib, a VDiff but very different from the previous day.  Being steeper and less travelled there were some tricky moves on the frist pitch and then a small traverse left and up the arête on the second.

Another good day out going over rope work and getting some climbing done.
