Myself and Mat planned to head up to Church Door buttress on Bidean nam Bian to do Crypt route, which I had been wanting to do since completing West Chimney last season. It is a very unique route being half climbing half caving with some spectacular situations. However after setting off and a 2 hour walk in to the base of the buttress we discovered that there was a team just starting the route and a team waiting.
With a team starting up West chimney as well we didn’t really fancy Flake route just next to Crypt route as all 3 routes share the last belay and last pitch to the top. So we decided to have a mountain day for some fitness and carried on up Central gully to the summit, which was firm under foot with a sugar top. With our calves having a good workout and with some stunning views over to the Glen Etive hills and Ben Nevis on the summit we headed down.
There was a team on Un Poco Loco (VII, 7) but backed off due to a large loose flack part way up the first pitch. The north face of Stob Coire nam Beith was very stripped with not many routes of note in any sort of condition.
